One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who's forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He's not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy...and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she'd ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she's done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she'll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate's given him a shot at redemption, he's determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton...well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

The Fine Art of Pretending was one of the best book that I read in 2014. So, when I found out that Rachel will write another book in the series--another book about Justin--I'm definitely really excited. Eventhough I love The Natural History of Us less, I still enjoyed it and look forward to the third book in this series.

When we met Justin Carter in The Fine Art of Pretending, he's basically the typical high school playboy--an athlete, cocky, and charming. Back then, I'd known that there's more than his persona, and I'm glad to say that we got to know Justin much, much better in this book. He's still the cocky athlete in front of everyone, but when he's with Peyton or his brother Chase, you can say that he's the opposite of his persona. Also, who knows that Justin turns out has a passion for writing?

Unlike Justin, we didn't meet Peyton in the first book, so she's basically a new character. Peyton is, well, to be frank, I have no words to describe her. She used to have GBS, so she always try to conquer her fears and live her life to the fullest, eventhough sometimes a little too full. She also has a passion and talent in horse-riding (something that I love to try, but sadly I live in a big city so no horses). In short, I admire her.

The romance in this book, as you can guess, is a second-chance romance. It's really sweet and full of angst--as one can expect from a second-chance romance. However, because of the mostly-flashbacks-writing-style, I can't enjoy the romance as much as I usually do. I didn't expect that this book has 2 times--freshman and senior year, and while the flashbacks are okay, I didn't enjoy it as much as I want to since it's unexpected.

Overall, The Natural History of Us is a sweet and adorable book about second-chance! If you love The Fine Art of Pretending, you definitely should read this one, and even if you dislike The Fine Art of Pretending, I still recommend it to you! (note : you don't have to read The Fine Art of Pretending before you read this book)
